Teaching Vocabulary

Teaching vocabulary words always make a great jumpstart for learning. Expanding your child’s vocabulary can enhance their creativity in one way or another. For example,a large vocabulary will enable him or her to write a composition about any specific topic in a more expressive way. Remember, words have always been the greatest tool to relay messages. Teaching vocabulary words has a way of inspiring and empowering individuals to be more creative. Furthermore, a great knowledge and vast selection of vocabulary words can mould your children toward optimal literacy.

Teaching Vocabulary

Learning anything at an early stage in life, will have long-lasting rewards, regardless of what it is that is being learned. If you have children and you would like them to get ahead in their life, maybe even become a real genius, teaching vocabulary words to them, will go a long way towards achieving your goal. If you would like them to grow as intelligent people, then you have to start investing in them while they are still at their age of rapid learning. It should be noted of course, that smartness always gets it’s roots from the simplest yet vital elements, such as teaching vocabulary words to your kids.

Many people think that teaching is a daunting task. While it may be true that teaching vocabulary words might be difficult at times, there are techniques and games that you can use to make the job more manageable. Just imagine the positive results that might be endowed on your children from your hard work.

Teaching Vocabulary

One good technique for teaching vocabulary words would be to get a children’s book, such as a story book, and read the words imprinted as texts to your children during their leisure time. Decide what you think are the most essential words in the passage, and list them all on a piece of paper. Perhaps five to ten words a day would do. Refer to the dictionary if necessary and provide the meaning of the words on the list. Teach the words to your children until they get a full understanding. When this group of words are fully understood, it will signify the need for you to move on to another set.

Besides this technique, there are many more ways of teaching vocabulary words to children. It may seem complex at first, but once they are able to get the knack of it, your kids should be able to develop faster learning mechanisms due to their young age group.

Vocabulary Worksheets

It can often become difficult to interact with people or write something that they will understand unless the chosen vocabulary words are widely understood by all. A collection of all the words familiar to a person within a certain language is known as that person’s vocabulary. One of the more popular ways to expand a person’s vocabulary is for a teacher to use vocabulary worksheets as an aid in the teaching process.

Vocabulary Worksheets

Since learning is a life time process, a person’s vocabulary develops and gets stronger with age and the rate at which it is used. The more often someone uses their vocabulary, the stronger it will become for them. A person will quickly be able to add new words from several verbal and non-verbal communications. Depending upon the way how a person recognizes a word, vocabulary may be of three types:

Reading Vocabulary

Listening Vocabulary

Speaking Vocabulary

Vocabulary worksheets are very much like a question paper. They allow the user’s mind to have some mental exercise through logic, guessing and creativity. The human eye is the most powerful sense organ in a person. Therefore, a visual vocabulary exercise can enable the learner to memorize words faster and for a longer period of time than other popular techniques.

Making vocabulary worksheets can be a bit tougher than solving one as you need to keep several aspects in mind when you are designing them. A few steps are discussed below about how to design vocabulary worksheets that will be efficient in delivering exactly what they are meant for.

Know your audience: even though there is no age group for making one’s vocabulary stronger, you must consider the age group, for whom you are going to design the vocabulary sheet.

Keep your instructions clear. The simpler, the better, is always key.

Provide adequate information to solve the questions, if the sheet deals with clues.

Leave space for writing the participant’s name and the date. The date may help to keep track regarding the participant’s improvement.

Leave space for self-help notes, for future reference.

Cover all types of methods to communicate. Typical methods used include puzzles, fill in the blanks, jumping letters, synonyms, antonyms, and so on.

Vocabulary Worksheets

It would be a good idea if you add levels to your vocabulary worksheets. The participants could then move from the easiest ones to tougher ones over time. Making a challenge such as this, helps to keep individuals motivated and striving for more. If you need help creating vocabulary worksheets, there are many websites with free downloadable forms for you to peruse. Just be sure to match the age group of the form to the class level that you happen to be working with.

Ways To Teach Vocabulary

According to a recent research study, students should encounter a new vocabulary word from 10 to 16 times to successfully learn the new word. If you bear in mind the large number of vocabulary words that students learn in every course, teachers have a lot of work to come up with effective ways to teach vocabulary. Although it is imperative for students to use proper structure and grammar, words are indeed the key carriers of meaning. Therefore, this means that the higher the number of words students can successfully handle, then the higher their chances of understanding the language and being understood.

Ways To Teach Vocabulary

One of the more effective ways to teach vocabulary and learn new words, is for teachers to teach the four key strategies of memorization to their students. These include:

noticing the vocabulary word with the help of their tutor

recognizing the new word with the help of their teacher

recognizing the word on their own

later, be in a position to recognize it and pronounce it.

Another one of the most effective ways to teach vocabulary is by reviewing and using the text before the reading experience. Tutors should review the text to determine which words might be unfamiliar to the students. Then, they should define and discuss the new words with the students. Discussing the meaning of the vocabulary helps the students to develop an understanding of the new word’s implication and denotation. At that point, synonyms can be introduced.

The more the students gets exposed to the new vocabulary words, the stronger their understanding will be. Therefore, tutors should not ignore repeated exposure of the new word in order to develop the understanding more fully. As previously stated, a new word must be repeated at least 10 to 16 times before the students can effectively learn it. Writing it in sentences as well as encouraging dialogue using the new word helps students to solidify the meaning.

Ways To Teach Vocabulary

Finally, a word map is among the effective ways to teach vocabulary to students. The tutor previews the text to determine the new words and helps create a word map to develop a comprehensive understanding. Teachers can also restructure the reading materials in several ways to help the students understand the vocabulary easily. For instance, some of the hard words should be replaced with easier synonyms to help students understand the text. Then, at a later time, the new words are re-introduced into the same passage for re-reading and discussion.

Vocabulary Games For The Classroom

When learning new vocabulary, a few students will find it difficult to learn and remember many new words. This is especially true as they get older, and the words get bigger. For this reason, making use of vocabulary games for the classroom, is something all teachers need to do, so that they can get their lesson thought to the students. By making learning fun, not only will the students want to learn new words, they will be excited about the manner in which the teacher is presenting the information to them as well.

Vocabulary Games For The Classroom

As a teacher, it is essential that you choose the right vocabulary games for the classroom. Some of the games that you might want to consider for your kids include:
- Jeopardy Vocabulary: using a series of clues and definitions, similar to the game show, to help kids learn words;
- Vocabulary Mimes: In this exercise, you will give one student a card, and they have to act out the word, without giving verbal clues, in order to help the other students trigger their memory to remember the words you have taught them;
- Vocabulary Pyramid: again, just like the game show, you will pair kids off in teams, and have each student give clues, so that the other student guesses the term that the first student is trying to describe and define to them.

These are some great games, and there are several other games teachers might invent or use in the classroom. All of them will have the effect of getting the children interested in learning. Depending on the age, the difficulty of the words, and the type of student you are dealing with, each teacher is going to revert to a different option when playing games in the classroom. Either way, these are some of the easy vocabulary games for the classroom that you can turn to, in order to get kids interested in learning new vocabulary words.

Vocabulary Games For The Classroom

Finally, just remember that in spite of all your best efforts, some children will still have a difficult time increasing their vocabulary. In such cases, invite the kids themselves to try and come up with their own vocabulary games for the classroom. Hey, you never know, they might just outsmart some of the lessons that you have prepared.

Everybody knows that a strong vocabulary will get you ahead in life. Everything from better grades on SAT scores to successful job interviews to carrying yourself in the public arena are all closely tied to a person’s vocabulary. All of this starts with early preparation in reading and writing. What parent wouldn’t want their child to excel in this arena and accordingly would be well served if they spent some quality time during the early formative years when teaching vocabulary strategies should be taking hold.

Teaching Vocabulary Strategies

It should come as no surprise to anyone that today’s young people have a myriad of electronic gadgets available to help them with their vocabulary learning strategies. There are apps for smartphones, ipads, kindles and of course all sorts of software applications for laptops which are as ubiquitous as the slide ruler of years ago.

Teaching vocabulary strategies today still incorporates some of the time tested techniques that young people have employed for decades. Yes, we live in an electronic age but good old fashion hard work will never be replaced. A young person needs to master the basic skills of memorization, comprehension, and repetition as a prerequisite to building any large base of words that their vocabulary will be built upon.

Teaching vocabulary strategies should involve as many senses as possible. The more the better as a student will have several sources of stimuli to help with their learning. Additionally, as many techniques a s possible should also be employed for the same reason. The different stimuli reinforce the learning game and solidify the foundation of education.

Teaching Vocabulary Strategies

As with all learning, if the teacher can add an element of fun to the equation, than the young minds will act like sponges and soak up all the good information. Teaching vocabulary strategies should include any and all games that help make the learning experience that much more enjoyable. Things like word association games, synonym and antonym contests, fill in the blank (think hangman), rhyming games and other closure games are all very important to bring about the desired result.

Teaching vocabulary activities is a wonderful way for young people to learn the basic skills needed to get ahead in school and in life. It all starts with the most basic of activities, memorization. Word association games are the fundamental building block for this technique. A teacher would employ a recognizable subject, say “occupations” and then ask the students to fill in the gaps. An example would be “fireman”… a fireman uses blank, blank and blank in the course of their day putting out fires and other tasks that make our world safer.

Teaching Vocabulary Activities

Building on memorization, the next most popular activity would be comprehension. With this activity, the students are pushed to a higher level of learning that employs other cognitive areas of the brain. The thinking process starts to really take over here as it becomes obvious who is using their brain and which ones are left idle.

As we move through the different activities, one common denominator held in high value is repetition. We humans are creatures of habit and so it goes with our teaching vocabulary activities that repetition is an integral part of learning and understanding the meaning of new words. Sentence formation that makes sense will only take place after a thorough understanding by the pupil through memorization and comprehension.

Teaching Vocabulary Activities

At this point, teaching vocabulary activities would now move to other word games that include synonyms, antonyms, and other word association analogies. When the pupil has demonstrated a thorough understanding of the vocabulary at hand, closure games are often employed where sentences and paragraphs are constructed with key elements missing. The student that has learned his or her vocabulary well, should not have much difficulty filling in the gaps.

Even though times change as evidenced by this classroom of the 1950′s, some things transcend all time barriers and remain the same. The core skills necessary for teaching vocabulary have not changed very much over the decades and so it goes today that these same sound techniques will be employed to enrich the lives of today’s students.

Teaching Vocabulary

Those who are teaching vocabulary will definitely find their tasks enjoyable. Imagine, you will be teaching people how to acquire new words of the language they are learning. Just like other areas, teaching vocabulary must be based on the needs of the learners. As a general rule applies, teach from simple to complex.

Learning vocabulary can be very difficult for starters. Those who have no idea yet about the language will find it really hard. So, teachers will find themselves using the translation technique to be the easiest approach. Teachers will make a list of words, mostly social formulas like greetings, which should be equivalent in all languages.

Teaching Vocabulary

Prior to thinking about what technique works best for the group of learners you have, you need to first find ways on how you will motivate the students to learn. Failure to consider this factor will just put teachers into trouble since the learners will not be paying attention if they do not have any reason to learn at all.

There are so many teaching techniques, that a teacher can try any number of ways that best fits the kind of learner(s) he(she) has. The technique must be based on the identified needs of the learner. If learners are properly motivated and their needs are determined, the right technique comes in very handy. Most of the techniques are effective depending on the type of learner.

Teaching Vocabulary

Teachers must also do a trial and error way of identifying the best technique in teaching vocabulary. At the start of the learning process, the teaching approaches should be varied and after that, he (she) can now determine what works best and what’s not working. Then, try to focus on this working approach. But be sure to make evaluations regularly to check if it is still effective or not. For variation purposes, make sure to venture into the so called eclectic approach where various techniques are combined when teaching vocabulary.
